Mission accomplished

Done, done, done. We were going to stay at a hotel in John O’Groats last night but it was awful so we stayed in the camper van again.

Over the past few days the 2 remaining grandsons (I’m sure we started with 3) have slept in a tent outside but they stayed in last night, not that I noticed as I fell asleep at the table, as did Lesley, just as we were supposed to be starting Cludo. What a blow.

John O’Groats was beautiful to wake up to this morning and the early morning sun painted a far more beautiful picture of the landscape and the offshore Orkneys than the rather desolate place I had arrived at yesterday. It might have been nicer if my alarm had not gone off at 6.00 but I would have missed that certain something that only sunsets and sunrises can give to a vista, plus I needed to use the campsite toilets, where is that key?

There is a small but magnificent derelict hotel on the sea front and we breakfasted at a burger van next to it. I had hoped that we would be able to cycle down Loch Ness today but logistics dictated that we headed for Edinburgh

We checked in to a Travel Lodge in Edinburgh at 8.30. We managed to squeeze in to the car park and decamped into the rooms. We had to change the rooms as somebody had been smoking in the kids room. Then we were off to Pizza Express.

As expected I went the wrong way but eventually we got there – civilisation at last.

And then bed, and a goog night’s sleep – lovely.

About marmiteman

Marmite man will be cycling 1000 miles over 10 days from Land's End to John O'Groats raising money for Mark Carey. My wife Lesley & grandsons Jake, Callum and Dylan and their Auntie Vicky are the support crew - not that they will be around during the day!
